SC 8000 Controllers Issue - start up issue - brand new

We have dual controller SC8000. one is up and running.

On second when i tried to upload the license file it didnt took it and gave me error. From deployment guide i found it could be configuration issue. Didnt work

So i restart the  controller i restarted and it gave me a question " what to restore backup configuration from disk " .

Initially i said no and tired to added the controller didnt work so i restarted and this time said yes. 

Now i am stuck with error : failed controllers, first selection , restart.

For more information snapshot attached.

Its brand new controllers not used as it was sitting long we are out of support.

Reporting Volume Tier Usage missing in Enterprise Manager

Enterprise Manager 2015 R1 with Compellent SC4020 6.6.5 . The gridview at "Compellent Enterprise Manager > Storage > Storage Types > Assigned Redundant > Volumes" should display separated tier usage for each volume, as exposed in several posts:

But mine only exhibit empty "Disk Space Active" columns:

When I save Volume Usage by Storage Type, I have all necessary data, but it is not available in the Enterprise Manager view. Any way to have those columns displayed correctly?

Compellent and SQL Server Geo / multi-subnet clustering

Hi,

We have 2 Dell Compellent sites (primary/secondary) at two different locations. We are looking at geo clustering / multi subnet clustering our SQL servers for DR purposes. I am wondering if anybody has successfully set this up and how it was setup. We are concerned about how we would set it up so that we can fail over and fail back. If their are any helpful documents available, that would be awesome.

Any help is greatly appreciated,

SCv2020 and Windows Deduplication

Hi guys, I have an SCv2020 with SCOS 6.6.5 connected via 12 Gbit SAS cables to VMware ESXi 6.0 U1b nodes

I have a Windows 2012 R2 virtual machine where I have enabled Windows native deduplication. The files where heavily duplicated, so I've got an excellent result deduplicating 500 GB to only 30 GB.

The problem is that at the SCOS level I still see 500 GB occupied by data, instead of 30 GB. How can I "clean" the unused data? I have the SCv2020 default Daily Replay Profile attached to this volume.

perform low level format

Just wondering, how do you perform low level format or erase zero on these drives?

Since this equipment doesnt have operating system, if it does, it does reconizes softwares like kill disk, etc.

So if i would like to perform this low level, how do you do this?

Dell SC4020 - Live Volume

Hi,

I plan to get two SC4020 and configure them for live volume on a single site.

All my servers will be running vSphere 6.0 U1.

Questions.

1. If the primary SC4020 fails, will the secondary SC4020  take the entire load ? Will there be any down time?

2. Can I load balance between the  two SC4020 ? Can both Compellent host primary volumes at the same time ?

3. If I locate my secondary SC4020 offsite what bandwidth is recommended if I would deploy live volume ?

4. Will live volume work with both  iSCSI & FC?

FTP Permissions issues

So I create the SMB share, add domain admins with full control to folder and share(windows environment) and I can map a drive to it, add folders, delete etc

I turned on FTP, set folder to the SMB share above.

The manual says that ftp access is tied to SMB permissions

But I can't access the FTP.  If I use FileZilla I can't log into it at all, access denied. If I just use internet explorer I can see the folders within the share but can't write anything to it.

What am I missing?

NAS version 5, and EM is 2015 R3

sdelete and SCOS

Hello, anyone is using sdelete utility to clean / free space on Windows virtual machines running on Dell Compellent SCOS? It works, it's OK to use it, or it is useless?

Forum is useless?

Sorry for the harsh subject line but as a customer for several months for a Compelllent SAN I was expecting a little more activity and help from their main forum.  I realize co-pilot is a phone call away, or email but I don't think it's necessary to have to open a case for every little thing.

But if if Dell/compellent is going to have a Forum for assistance, then someones job should be to monitor and help/assist with peoples questions. Questions seem to go un answered for days and weeks if answered at all.  So if that is the case, and the priority isn't there to support the forums, then why have it all?  for the money we pay for these things, maybe it's just me but I was expecting more.  As a Sys admin for several brands, mostly Dell servers, I'm a little shocked at what I see here.  I remember doing the compellent training and they praised how good their support was including the forums.  While I have no issues with co-pilot and any case I've opened with them,  this place...sorta useless.

Unable to boot the OS for LUN swapped server :(

HI all,

We have two Dell Poweredge R920 server in our environment.Due to the licensing factor we have swap the LUN between the Poweredge R920.Now we are unable to boot the server from SAN.

1. RHEL - we have installed with LCC and ESXi installed without LCC(Life Cycle Controller).

2. Location need to find the WWN detials of RACK Server.

Storage : Dell compellent series

I'm able to view the correct LUN between the server.Any help much appreciated.

Question about VMWare virtual machines (cloning or duplicating)

I have been asked to take on a job creating and maintaining virtual servers that are going to be hosted on a Dell FX2 (VMWare Essentials 6+) and an SCv2020 Storage Controller, but I am new to the process of the setting the VM's.  I guess my question is how hard is it to duplicate a clean VM of the server?  If I'm going to be running 3 instances of Server 2012 R2, is it as simple as creating the first image and creating a clone, or is there going to be the process of doing 3 separate installs of the OS?

Moving an SC8000 FC to new SAN switches

I have an SC8000 FC connected to two Brocade Fabrics. There are two fault domains one to each Fabric. And we are using Virtual Ports.


All the hosts are VMware with an HBA connection to each Fabric.

We are replacing the Brocades with Cisco MDS. I am trying to go through my mind how I can move between the Switches with no downtime. My hosts are no problem. But how can I move the Array between the old Fabric and the new Fabric. Should I just remove the redunandt fiber from each Fault Domain to the new Switches? But if I do that, do I need to zone them out first? I have lots of things running through my head, but cant seem to put it in words. So looking for any assistance.

FS8600 and Tiering\NAS Pool Dilemma

We are just having a new Compellent installed with SC9000s and then 6 x FS8600s for the NAS front end (our main usage will be NFS & SMB).

We have two storage tiers, SSD and SATA. When creating a NAS Pool for our FluidFS cluster it seems we can only create one pool whereas ideally we'd like to have one for SSD and one for SATA.

Do we split our FluidFS cluster into two (4 x FS86000 for SSD and 2 x FS8600 for SATA for example) so we can have two NAS pools or should we just allocate almost all the space over the two tiers into a single NAS pool and then the data will tier automatically on the SC9000?

The second option obviously is a single NAS Pool covering both tiers and then have faith in the auto-tiering but we really don't want most SMB shares using SSDs and don't want any critical applications (even if not heavily used all the time) being on SATA.

 

How do we set this up or are these the only two options?

SSD tier-1 is full

i just saw that storage tier 1 is filled up 99% here is the screen shot for the your understanding.

i also saw the Storage tier configuration there is clearly show some free space ? storage 2nd and 3rd tier also have lots of free space you can see in this image..

tier 1 raid 5-5 is almost filled up whereas the raid 10 having enough space can anyone elaborate what is the mechanism of two raid in tier-1 i assume the raid 10 is for write and raid 5-5 for read?

correct me if i am wrong and also suggest the best possible way to running out of this current stat thanks.

SC4020 connection to M1000 e on Brocade M4424

Hello team, we have a new SC 4020 FC, with 2 brocade 300 switches, we would like to connect it to our m1000e which has 2x Brocade M4424.

Would it be ok to make fabric between Brocade 300 and Brocade m4424?

What zoning option would be the best?

SSD is filling up...

Even when moving programs to install in Datapart C (D)  the 250 GB SSD C-OS partition is filling up rapidly.  Doesn't the Datapart C (D)share the load in any way?  Been trying to move files from old computer... 8100 to  8900 for two days.. cannot figure out how to get my software on the XPS 8900... do I just keep installing and when the SSC C-OS is full, will it then load over to the Datapart C (D).

Do a lot of video and audio editing and have big programs... Premiere, After Affects, Audition, RX5, etc. and not enough room to install them!  Newbie at this SSD thing... can someone help me out?  Thanks much.
