Removing disks/tiers

$

Hi, please excuse my extremely limited knowledge of Compellents!

We've a number of 2 tier systems, 15K and 7.2K disks in each tier. We've abandonded our support contract with Dell as we're moving to cloud and SANs will be decomissioned. In the meantime we've recently suffered a high number of 15K disk failures, and rather than source replacements I'm looking to remove working disks from some under-used SANs.

As it happens we have a couple of mirror SANs where we could potentially remove all 15K disks and still have plenty of capacity with the 7K disks (it's not clear to me why they have a fast tier at all, given that their bottleneck is a WAN).

The problem is that I have no idea how to remove an entire tier without potentially damaging the data that needs to remain on the SAN. Google-fu is failing me. Is this even possible? As mentioned above, my knowledge of these systems is extremely limited =:-(

Thanks,

Good afternoon,

We have had an issue recently when using 3 known working drives from a Compellent SC2020 in a Compellent SC4020. The drive Part numbers are RWV5D which is a Dell Enterprise Plus 1.2TB SAS 12Gbps 10K drive. The fault we are presented with is below. Please can anyone advise what might be causing this issue? Thank you!

CITV problems configuring VASA provider

I'm trying to set up the VASA provider on the CITV appliance (i've tried 3.0 and 3.1), and after setting the VASA provider password it immediately reports back "Could not obtain server certificate". I don't know where to go from here because that error provides nothing to go on. Is it my vSphere certificate? The Dell Storage Manager certificate? Something else entirely?

The documentation is frustratingly vague, where it says I need the IP of the Entrprise Manager Data Collector but the user/pass for Enteprise Manager and specifies that I need to enter a VASA provider user but not where that user is supposed to be (vCenter? Enterprise Manager? The *** CITV appliance?) or if it is supposed to create it on its own, which maybe? Why else would I need to verify my password there but not in the beginning when I enter my vSphere credentials?

To be on the safe side, i've created users in both the Enterprise Manager, the Enterprise Manager Data Collector, and vSphere but that doesn't seem to help. No firewalls are on either and the appliance is on the same network as the rest of the system. I also have no problems setting up the RMSV and that prompts me to accept certificates and works fine.

I have successfully deployed the DSM virtual machine data collector in vcenter.  How are you able to get to a root prompt.  All I get is a menu of four choices.

Thank you.

Dell Storage Manager Data Collector - Registered Certificate

I have successfully deployed Dell Storage Manager Data Collector.  I am attempting to register our SSL certificate.  I have created the public key and pkcs#12 with an alias.  I keep getting the error certificate exception.  I would like clarity on what exactly the requirements are for the pub key and pkcs#12 files.  I use openssl to create the files.

Thank you.

Powershell Enterprise Manager-Connect Could not create SSL/TLS secure channel

Hi all,

I'm writing a Powershell-Script to manage a Compellent environment.

I have an error, which is new for me: I can't connect to EM because SSL/TLS-connection is not possible.

I did some "Google"-search and found, that Microsoft is changing some things in SSL/TLS.
The related MS-Patch is installed and the related Registry-Keys are set.

I have a Windows 2012 Server (without R2) running Enterprise Manager and I'm working with the
newest Compellent Command-Set DellStoragePowerShellSDK_v2_2_1_362A.

Does anybody know, how to deal with that?

Thanks for any help

When I see downward pressure on my pressure report in Storage Manager, when will that data actually move?  At the next snapshot? When the next snapshot expires? or 12 days from when the down pressure is reported?

Thanks for any insight,

Bill

Anyone tried vSphere 6.5 VMFS6 auto unmap?

$

The VMware HCL says the new auto unmap requires SCOS 7.1 (which is key customer still).  I have tried it on a SCOS 6.7.11 and the auto unmap doesnt appear to be reclaiming. Its strange why SCOS 7.1 would be required, maybe the VAAI primitive has changed a bit?

Hi,

The Storage (SC4020) has been configured already. Now is it possible to change the configured Virtual mood ports to Legacy mood ports ? Is there any way or will we need to reset the  the storage ?

Appreciate your support.

It appears reading through the VMware HCL, that SCOS 7.1x wants MRU instead of round robin (RR) path selection.

I'm receiving the error "Prefetch Page Failure, Failing all outstanding requests" about 30 times times a second for 3 seconds at an interval of about 10-20 minutes, it occurs on both controllers but at different times. Both controllers are running version 6.7.22

Does anyone know what could cause this and how to stop it from happening?

My 1st Storage Device, SCv2020.

I've been given the go ahead to replace two aging HP servers with 2x Dell SCv2020's and 2x R630's.  The HP's currently host HyperV VM's stored on local storage, my plan is to use the SCv2020's to store the VM's and make them available to the R630's so I can live migrate between hosts.

Having not used this type of device before I was thinking that I would use a group of SSD's for HyperV and then the slower 10K HDD's for general file sharing.  Which it still looks like I can do, but I'm not sure this would make best use of it.

Having setup one of the SCv's for testing the default setup has grouped all the storage in to one large junk (7xSSD, 7x10K's) where I was expecting to have to specify what I wanted.  So my question is could I create a 1.5TB volume for HyperV and another 5TB volume for general file storage and leave the SCv to decide which disks are better suited to which task based on access?  Or something along these lines.

Thanks in advance.
