I need to monitor Dell Compellent SC4020 + NAS FS8600 with nagios/icinga. I can`t find any plugin online that can help me with this task. I would like status like raid, disk and volume-status. Someone knows how/where to get this ?

thin or thick disk in vmware

Got myself a new SC4020 and I'm having a fun time trying to figure this thing out, especially how to calculate space usage.

Per the best practice document I'm supposed to use thick (lazy zeroed) disks. In my environment though there's a lot of development happening so a lot of snapshots on the vms.

A lot of my users will take a snapshot as soon as they get their VM so if I make everything thick I will lose 25gigs at the vmware level right away and won't be able to put as many vms per datastore.

Is there any problem if I go thin provisioned in vmware and end up being thin on thin? In such a case, does VMware become my authority on how much space I have left on the datastore?

mapping a volumes to multiple esxi clusters

Hi,

I want to create a iso/template datastore, and I want to map it across multiple clusters.

I get a warning advising against this.....why? What is different from mapping it to one cluster instead of 3? If all the hosts were in one cluster it would make no difference surely?

Cheers

Do I still need to backup the Recovery Partition?

$

I have a XPSL 502X laptop that came with a Recovery Partition (R) to restore the system to its original Win 7 factory image.  The third party system image backup software  that I use invariably assigns  both the R and the C partition as the 2 partitions to backup to create the system image.  Since I have already migrated to Win 10, I cannot see myself reverting back to Win 7, let alone the Win 7 factory image.  Since the R should have never been changed in its day to day operation, can I just ignore including the R in creating the system image?  Furthermore, can I even delete the R partition since I will not be using it anyway?  Will deleting the R partition cause any repercussions?

Powershell List Replica Replays

I am trying to automate DR by creating views of replica replays to mount to hosts. I need to enumerate the replays before I can mount them, but when I try to enumerate replays on replica volumes, nothing is returned.

For example:

Get-SCReplay -SourceSCVolume $myVolume -Connection $myConnection

When $myVolume is a local volume (not replicated) this returns a list of replays. When $myVolume is a replica (from another storage center) this command returns nothing.

Any ideas? Am I going about this the wrong way? I have turned to scripting as the Enterprise Manager Active/Test DR Features are not comprehensive enough to meet my needs.

Considering SC4020 all flash

Hi,

we are considering a SC4020 all flash array. We got a quote with 6x 1.6TB WI and 12x 3.8TB RI TLC. They told us, that the tier 1 should be sized to hold about 12 days of writing data.

What I understand in the white paper "Flash-optimized Data Progression" is, that beginning with SC OS 6.4 the data will be moved to SSD RI tier after every replay taken. So if we take a replay every 4 hours, we do not need such a large tier 1 with WI SSD. Is this correct?

And a second question: We got also a quote about a single tier SC4020 with RI SSD only (24x 1.9TB), which fits better in our budget. Is there a reasonable maximum size of daily data to be written?

Thanks!

Crazy Compression Numbers SC4020

Anyone using compression on their Compellent?  I just enabled for our 2 large file server volumes (~2 tb each) and am seeing some crazy numbers in Enterprise Manager.  It appears that it compressed almost 1.3-1.5 TB of data into ~50 GB.  If so, thats one<ADMIN NOTE: Profanity removed as per TOU>of a compression algorithm!

Maybe I'm just misunderstanding what is going on here?

For example:

Configured Space: 2 TB

Free Space: 477.52 GB

Total Disk Space (WHAT????): 142.16 GB

Actual Space: 1.62 TB

Active Space: 1.53 TB (1104.76%)

Replay Space: 90.45 GB (63.62%)

Savings vs RAID 10 (WHAT AGAIN?): 3.09 TB

On the other hand under Disk space saved through compression its showing ~5.72 GB.

Somewhere the statistics must be off... Right?

SCV2020 Add Storage Center

I have 2 new SCV2020's that will replicate from primary to dr site. I am following the Enterprise Manager Admin instructions on how to Add Storage Center with the Wizard and I am using the Dell Enterprise Manager 2015 R1 storage client. The problem is that i am logged into and managing one SCV2020, i do not have the option to add another Storage Center. I'm fairly new to Dell Storage so probably doing something wrong but any help appreciated.

Steps1.
Click the Storage view.2.
In the Storage pane, select Storage Centers.3.
In the Summary tab, click Add Storage Center. The Add Storage Center wizard appears.•
If one or more Storage Centers are mapped to another user, the dialog box displays a list of available Storage Centers.

Thanks,Mark

Hi Guys,

We have a SCv2080 we are just doing the initial config for now.

All is well except we were doing some testing and released some disks, this moved it to the unassigned folder.

We now can't seem to add these unassigned disks back to the disk folder / pool.

Latest firmware etc

I can't seem to see anyway to assign it back as explained in the documentation, am i missing something?

SC030 - 3 disks failures - How to reset storage

$

We just got a Compellent SC030 donated to our University but it has 3 failed disks. We are able to access the GUI, but no serial access for some reason. We deleted the volumes, servers, however we are not able to create a new volume. I have tried  releasing disks but can not because they have user allocated blocks. I have tried to remove th user blocks by a re-balance but the re-balance will not complete. I have tried creating a new storage folder and moving disks but no luck.  I have a few smaller disks and have tried replacing the bad disks with those, but the SAN just wrote user blocks to those disks and will still not re-balance.

No support coverage. I do not have the original licenses. Cache cards show expired. Controller versions 5.3.3

Any suggestions to force the removal of user blocks.

Someone care to share their Linux multipath.conf file?

We are putting our first physical Redhat (rhel 6.8) on a compellent. sc8000/scos 6.7.5.

I am using the multipath parameters that is advised in a Dell TID which is pretty much the defaults it says after rhel 5.4.

However when testing doing some SCP copies and pulling a fiber, my scp will stall for about a minute. During that time a multipath -l still shows 4 active paths. After a minute it will show 2 and my scp will resume. I have to believe I need another option to in order to getting data traffic from stalling out like that. It seems odd because the defailt is round-robin so not sure why it times out for a minute.

And to be clear this is pulling a 1 of 2 fibers from the phsyical redhat host to test a failure. Everything is zoned correctly too, ie my physical HBA zone to the virtual ports on the Compellent.

Ent Mgr DR Activation Script

We are in the process of trying to automate DR activation and I was wondering if there was any sort of scripting interface to replace manually going into Enterprise Manager and activating DR? We have several problems with the manual method, not the least of which is user error. We would like to setup scripts to automatically activate DR, then another script to mirror back the changes and deactivate DR. I am fairly familiar with the PowerShell interface, but there does not seem to be anything in the command set.

Default username and password for the Dell DSM VA

Hi all,

I've downloaded the Dell DSM VA version 16.2.1.213 - and I've used the traditional username and password for most compellent devices (admin / Admin / mmm) and it doesnt appear to load or like this.

Can someone enlighten me on the process for logging into the Va for the first time and using it.

Downloading it and the associated PDFs doesnt seem to provide an easy guide.
